A portion of our family at JMC is made up of Students from both Universities here in Newcastle, who have all found JMC to be a welcoming and comforting place. They are a well-loved and valued part of the family here. Your student years can be one of the most fruitful times of your life and will help to define you as a person. Our aim is to guide and encourage our students and young adults as they seek to grow in their personal faith and learn what it means to follow Jesus during their time at University.
Our Life group meets, during university term times, on a Wednesday evening at 7.00 in JesSpace (above Cafe 1901) and we spend time together reflecting on our weeks, reading the Bible together and discussing the effect of the chosen passage in our lives. We also bring our struggles with our individual faith to the group and support each other as we journey through this point in our lives together.
On Sunday mornings after the service, a large bunch of us always have lunch together. Sometimes this is provided such as Soup Sunday, Food at someone’s house or bring and share lunches. But we also sometimes grab meal deals from Tesco or go to the pub and enjoy food and fellowship together.
We also encourage our younger members to get involved in the morning service each week so they can develop their different gifts. There is so much that students and young adults can get involved in such as share their talents in the worship band as a musician or singer, helping with the audio/visual side of the service, coffee rota, Sunday school, welcome team and more. One of the core pillars of Methodism is its lifting up of lay people within roles and we believe at JMC no matter what your gift is that we can find a place for you to grow and serve the wider church. Also every so often the Student and Young Adult group plan and organise the service where they can all explore the gifts God has given them.
We also have our informal worship and prayer nights, 2 times a month, called Sanctuary. On the 2nd Sunday of every month, we meet together for our acoustic worship evening starting at 7:15 for coffee and 7:45 start and the last Sunday of every month, we meet for our prayer nights at 7. Both of these are super laid back evenings where we can come, worship and pray however we want. We are joined by our friends from Brunswick Methodist Church and Trinity Gosforth for these incredibly powerful evenings. The theme for the 2018/19 academic years is Church and Prayer traditions – Exploring why the Church does certain traditions and how we can learn from them today.
We are a friendly and loving community made up of people of all ages and backgrounds and all students and young adults are welcome at JMC regardless of your background, or which University you belong to. So no matter who you are or what position you are in, you will be welcomed here at JMC.
Please do pop along to any of the things we do throughout the week, Adam is our Student and Young Adult worker and he will be super happy to welcome you to our wonderful community. He loves coffee and 1901, so if you want to go for coffee with him and chat to him more about the church or have any questions then you are welcome to email him at firstname.lastname@example.org and he will get back to you.
