Knit4Africa

JMC has an on-going project, helping to providing much needed resources to our friends in Africa.

The Knit4Africa project provides a range of knitted (and crocheted) clothing items and blankets, which are periodically sent to the Christian African Relief Trust (www.cartyorkshire.co.uk) based in Huddersfield, Yorkshire. CART ship goods over to those in need in Africa, primarily Ghana, Liberia, Malawi, Kenya and Tanzania.

We now meet on Wednesdays in Jes Space, above Cafe 1901, 10-12noon. However, this doesn't stop you making things at home, too.

We also need donations of wool/yarn - though acrylic based yarn is probably best. We accept any thickness of yarn (though DK is the size we generally use for our projects), odd balls, left over hanks from your own knitting projects. Cash donations would also be very welcome, so we can keep our stock of yarn up; it also costs us to ship out stuff to Huddersfield!

In the Summer of 2010, we sent an amazing 78 jumpers, 8 blankets and 5 hats to Africa. We manage between us two or three jumpers a month and a blanket or two.

If you can't make Wednesday mornings to join our group, you can always knit or crochet at home. And, don't worry if you haven't time to knit a whole blanket - the task can seem daunting - just knit what squares you can and bring them in to us.
