For a number of years, a dedicated group has been knitting jumpers and blankets (and crocheting, too) for children in Africa: Knit4Africa. Following the 2011 Jesmond Community Festival, they formed a craft group in JMC, called JesCraft, to meet together on a regular basis and to continue the Knit4Africa project.
JesCraft meets every Wednesday between 10.00am – 12.00pm in JesSpace, above 1901 Caffe Bistro. Members chat, drink coffee or tea, and work on creative projects. In addition to making blankets and jumpers destined for Africa, they have knitted hats for the People’s Kitchen and Seamen’s Mission. Members also undertake their own craft projects, making everything from bags to baby shoes, hats to prayer shawls, using different skills such as knitting, crocheting, cross stitch, sewing and embroidery.
Anybody is welcome to come along and join in regardless of age, gender and skill level. There is no subscription; to join is free.
If you have the needles, please bring them and share your skills with the others. If this is something you have never tried before, but you fancy starting a new hobby, do come along. Members will be more than willing to show you how to start any skill of your choice. They will be able to lend you the tools in the beginning, and give you advice on what to get for yourself to enable you to continue at home.
